Oconee County, Georgia is a beautiful county situated just south of Athens and the University of Georgia.  Progressive Farmer magazine’s February 2009 issue cites Oconee County as the 7th Best County to Raise a Family in the United States, and Oconee County was cited as the #1 County in the whole southeastern United States to raise a family. These rankings took into account that both of our High Schools are ranked in the top 1300 (top 6%) in the nation, as well as FFA and 4-H program enrollments.

Oconee County is no stranger to Progressive Farmer’s Top 10 rankings. Previous designations included:

* 2nd Best Place to Live in Georgia (2005)

* 3rd Best Place to Live in Rural America

* Number 1 Best Place to Live in Rural Southeast (2006)

* One of the Five Best Cities in the US to Retire To

* 9th Best Place to Live in Rural America, 8th Highest Percentage of College Educated Population, 7th Best Air Quality (2007)

Of course, for those of us that live here, there's no surprise to Oconee County consistently receives rave reviews in similar lists.  The combination of its rural lifestyle and the growing arts scene appeals to those seeking a relaxed, laid back lifestyle while maintaining close access to Athens and Atlanta.  As a desirable destination and one that encounters ever-increasing traffic along its thoroughfares, the north-central region is poised to ensure is the developmental corridor where high quality business, commercial and high-density residential development can be appropriately targeted, while outlying agricultural regions can be protected and reserved. As the county adapts to the continuous population and commercial growth, its historic cities still provides plenty of unique shops, entertainment, and dining while located in close proximity to the  University of Georgia with its offering of Higher education at its finest and leading edge and nationally recognized innovative research.

With all that, and so much more, what's not to love about Oconee County as a county to live, work and play?
